What does a child at risk for drug abuse look like?
Although we don’t want to admit it, many of us have an image of an at-risk adolescent. This image may reveal any number of racial, socioeconomic, or gender stereotypes about which kids are most likely to use drugs. The stereotypes may be very damaging- especially when they cause parents to believe that their own children aren’t at risk, because they are.
Dr. Sandra Wills Hannon, health communications expert, explains the danger of these kinds of stereotypes. "Some parents may think, 'My child doesn't fit the profile of a drug user, so I don’t need to talk to him or her about drugs.'" Other parents might think, 'We are a member of this or that at-risk group, so no matter what I do, my child will probably use drugs.'
Dr. Wills Hannon explains that both of these inferences are mistaken. "All parents need to know that their adolescents—simply by virtue of being adolescents—are at risk for drug abuse. This does not mean that all adolescents use drugs. In fact, most don't. But adolescence is a time when all parents can help their children establish lifelong patterns of healthy behavior. If a person reaches the age of 21 without ever trying drugs or alcohol, the odds are very small that they will ever have a drug or alcohol problem."
