Tricyclic antidepressants are the antidepressant drugs that act by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin hormones and thus making more of those substances available to act on the receptors in the brain. Since their discovery in the 1950s, tricyclic antidepressants have been used to treat mental depression and like any other anti-depression drug; they were prescribed to reduce symptoms such as extreme sadness, loneliness, and lack of energy.
