Siblingship DNA Testing

Using 16 genetic markers, Siblingship DNA testing determines if two individuals share one or both parents (i.e. if they are full siblings).

Our DNA test kits come in two collection formats:

Buccal: Buccal is the "Cheek Swab" Test. A buccal swab is soft and resembles a large Q-Tip. It is used to collect a sample of cheek cells by simply rubbing the inside of the cheeks. It is as accurate as blood, as the DNA is the same. A person should, however, abstain from drinking coffee for a few hours before taking a sample, and smokers should rinse and brush their cheeks with a toothbrush before swabbing.

Blood: If you're considering the blood option, it is quite important that you contact your physician for the collection of blood samples for children under 8 years of age. We offer this option because it is much faster and easier for you to collect. The procedure involves a small lancet that is used to lightly pierce a finger (most don't even feel it). A small drop of blood is then transferred to a collection card - that's it.

Often, these are required when the alleged father isn’t available for the paternity tests and the unsure siblings or the legal system needs to know if the siblings have one or both parents in common. There are two type of the tests suggested for this purpose: 1) Full Siblingship test: This test is performed to know if the two siblings share both biological parents. 2) Half Siblingship test: This test is for those siblings who believe that they only share a biological parent in common. The results of the test are often obtained in the form of a genetic index that indicates odds in favor of, or against to a biological sibling relationship. Because of the several confounding factors involved in these tests, results are often not as definitive as those of other DNA relationship tests like paternity or maternity tests. These tests may also be used to solve the adaptation reunification situations. The involvement of the mother is always appreciated as this gives a better conclusive result.

These tests determine if siblings share two biological parents and when they only share one biological parent, respectively. Siblingshiptest however, are not as definite as DNA test due to perplexing factors in the test. Nevertheless, the result is admissible to the court and is likewise helpful in resolving family issues.
