Our DNA test kits come in two collection formats:

Buccal: Buccal is the "Cheek Swab" Test. A buccal swab is soft and resembles a large Q-Tip. It is used to collect a sample of cheek cells by simply rubbing the inside of the cheeks. It is as accurate as blood, as the DNA is the same. A person should, however, abstain from drinking coffee for a few hours before taking a sample, and smokers should rinse and brush their cheeks with a toothbrush before swabbing.

Blood: If you're considering the blood option, it is quite important that you contact your physician for the collection of blood samples for children under 8 years of age. We offer this option because it is much faster and easier for you to collect. The procedure involves a small lancet that is used to lightly pierce a finger (most don't even feel it). A small drop of blood is then transferred to a collection card - that's it.

Twin zygosity test is done to determine if the twins are fraternal or identical. Fraternal twins mean that the babies have same sex and similar features but can be easily differentiated unlike the identical twins which develop from the division of a single zygote into two different embryos. As fraternal twins are dizygotic twins, developed from two separately fertilized eggs, they do not have identical DNA whereas, identical twins are monozygotic i.e. they have identical DNA patterns as they are developed from a single zygote formed by fertilization of an egg by a single sperm. In twin zygosity tests, certain DNA marker patterns of both the twins are compared and these profiles tend to match exactly in case of monozygotic twins. These tests, although done to satiate parental curiosity most of the times, may have clinical significance in case organ transplantation is required for one of the twins as chances of graft rejection are very few in case of monozygotic twins. The DNA samples may be collected from the cells obtained through buccal swabs which are very easy to use. A twin zygosity test only requires the participation of two individuals: the twins. Neither of the twins’ parents needs to submit a DNA sample for testing.
