Cocaine Drug Testing

Cocaine is a crystalline tropane alkaloid that comes from processing the leaves of the coca plant. It is most commonly seen as a fine, white powder but can also be mixed with water and other elements to produce “crack,” commonly seen as small, crystalized chunks.

It is a powerful nervous system stimulant, with effects lasting from 15–30 minutes to an hour, depending on how it is done. It is extremely addictive, as it acts as a serotonin–norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor.

Cocaine is most commonly snorted through the nose in its powder form, but can also be smoked with tobacco or marijuana. The powder is generally not smoked by itself. It can be dissolved and injected into the bloodstream. In its crack form, it is smoked using a pipe. A far less common way of doing cocaine is to use it as a suppository.

Cocaine increases alertness, feelings of well-being and euphoria, energy and motor activity but can also induce anxiety, paranoia and restlessness and can lead to tremors, convulsions and increased body temperature.

Excessive or prolonged use can cause itching, abnormally elevated heart rate, hallucinations, paranoid delusions and can destroy the inner lining of the nose if snorted.

People high on cocaine will have dilated pupils, increased body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure and will experience a dry mouth.

It is common for users to talk excessively while on cocaine and smokers will often chain smoke while high on the drug. It also suppresses appetite and habitual users will often be very thin and malnourished.

Overdoses cause hyperthermia and a marked elevation of blood pressure, which can be life-threatening.
