Cocaine is a crystalline tropane alkaloid obtained from leaves of coca plant. It is known to stimulate central nervous system (CNS) and suppress appetite. Cocaine is used in medicine as a topical anesthetic. Cultivation, possession and distribution of cocaine is considered illegal for non-medicinal and non government sanctioned purposes world-wide. There are various forms of cocaine like cocaine sulphate, freebase, crack cocaine, chewed or eaten, insufflations, injected, smoked, coca leaves infusion, and oral. Cocaine stays in body for up to 90 days. The presence of cocaine can be determined in blood, saliva, sweat and urine, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Some of the cocaine drug tests involve intrusive means for testing cocaine use while some other tests include non-intrusive ways. While intrusive tests are able to detect dug abuse primarily over last week, the non-intrusive tests can detect substance abuse over a longer period of time. Cocaine taken once, stays in the body for different durations in different organs. There are a number of confounding factors like figure, strength, sex, tolerance and quality of cocaine etc. which all make it difficult to estimate exact amounts of the drug. A metabolite of cocaine named benzoylecgonine san stay for up to 30 days for an addict, even after the drug itself is gone.
