Prostate: The Prostate Specific Antigen PSA4 blood test is a laboratory procedure that measures a substance produced by the prostate gland called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) . Small amounts of this substance may get into the bloodstream and can be measured by the PSA test.

Most of the cancer cases go undetected in the initial stages and are only reported when the tumors have firmly established, angiogenesis has taken place or the basal lamina is crossed. There are several different types of cancer but the hallmark remains the uncontrolled proliferation and cellular division. Genetically, this has been attributed to a diverse array of mutations in various tumor suppressor genes and over-expression of various oncogenes i.e. the genes that disposes normal cells to change into cancerous tumor cells. Most cancers begin with formation of lumps of actively dividing cells called tumors. However, tumors are not cancers until they have turned crossed the basal lamina and have turned malignant. When a tumor is small and localized, it is easy to treat it by radiotherapy, chemotherapy or by surgical removal. However, when it turns malignant, it is very difficult to control and treat. As it goes - prevention is always better than cure and same holds true for cancers. It is always better to be proactive rather than be reactive. Improvement in early detection of cancer has saved many lives. There are some antibody based assays for tumor detection as tumors or cancer cells have been shown to specifically over-express certain cell surface markers. In these tests, the antibody travels through the bloodstream and binds to the specific antigens expressed by the tumors. Often, these antibodies are attached with radioactive isotopes that can be detected from outside the body by a gamma camera. This also identifies the site of suspected tumor location.
