Thanks to Green revolution and advancements in agricultural technologies. While fertilizers and pesticides have dramatically improved agricultural yields, their indiscriminate use has also intoxicated natural water bodies and under soil water tables. More and more cases of pesticide intoxication are being reported as many of these commonly used weedicides, insecticides and chemical fertilizers have entered our food chains either through consumption of intoxicated fishes or through direct consumption of untreated water. Pesticide ingestion and inhalation can damage internal organs, cause cancer, and may eventually be fatal. The neurotoxic effects of many pesticides, including DDT, are very well documented. Although, the household water supply is often treated and filtered, it is nevertheless very important to get the water used for drinking purposes, tested for pesticide contamination. Many water check kits offer testing for pesticide contamination. These kits are pretty easy to use and provide a cost effective way of periodic monitoring of household water quality.
