Benzodiazepines are any of the several similar lipophilic amines used as tranquilizers or sedatives or hypnotics or muscle relaxants. They are one of the most widely prescribed drugs of medical significance across the globe. These are widely used to control of symptoms appeared due to stress and as sleeping tablets for patients of insomnia. For the treatment of anxiety benzodiazepines are prescribed to be consumed in short intervals to promote mental and physical relaxation. These drugs are capable of interfering with the chemical activity in the brain and nervous system, crossing the blood brain barrier. As a result, they reduce the nerve cells’ communication or interaction and may lead to miscoordination or reduced brain activity. Chronic use of benzodiazepines can lead to dependency and addiction. Presence of the benzodiazepines and their metabolites can be tested by a rapid, visual, qualitative, competitive binding immunoassay in human urine. In a chromatographic absorbent device, drug or drug metabolites from the sample compete for a labeled-antibody or drug conjugate immobilized on a porous membrane for a limited number of binding sites. This test provides a fast confirmation of the presence of Benzodiazepines in the subject sample and result is considered to be positive at the minimum cutoff sensitivity level of 200 ng/ml, as per the standards of the NIDA and Departments of Health and Human Services. Mostly the people who are reported for narcotics abuse have been observed to be addicted to these drugs also.
