DETECTION TIME FRAME
The window of detection for steroids varies drastically. At the low end of the spectrum the window is only 2-3 days. On the high end, a couple of months. Steroids, similar to THC, are not water soluble. With testosterone, because it occurs naturally you will almost always detect the hormone. What are Steroids?
Anabolic steroids, also known as anabolic-androgenic steroids or AAS, are a class of steroid hormones related to the hormone testosterone.
- Anabolic refers to substances that enhance muscle building
- Androgenic is the term used to describe masculine characteristics in the male: male body type, and secondary sex characteristics, facial hair, sexual characteristics etc.
- Steroids refers to the class of drugs to which these compounds are assigned according to their structure.
Anabolic steroids are legally available only by a physician's prescription. When obtained, these compounds may be taken either orally, or by injection. Anabolic steroids are extremely easy to misuse, and, when taken in abusive dosages lead to serious health problems, often centered about damage to the heart. In long-term use, the effects of anabolic steroids are almost always irreversible.
Earlier, when testosterone was found to build muscle tissue and to cause the development of male secondary sex characteristics, medical researchers tried to use testosterone to treat diseases that caused the loss of muscle mass.
Unfortunately, testosterone in its natural form has a half life of only about ten minutes in the body. So, medicinal chemists began to alter natural testosterone in an attempt to make drugs that would work like testosterone but last long enough in the body to have an effect and they came up with today's steroids which can either be taken orally, injected in veins or applied as skin patches.
COLLECTION INFORMATION
It is important that the collector get the specimen to the lab as soon as possible. Degradation is possible. The specimen must be shipped within 5 days of collection (sooner than that is even better). If it is difficult to ship right after the collection process is complete, the specimen needs to be refrigerated rather than stored at room temperature.
1. Collect the urine sample in a sterile cup or other sterile receptacle.
2. Using the syringe provided, remove the cap and draw a full tube of sample pulling the syringe handle to its end.
3. Replace the cap over the end of the syringe.
4. Break off the syringe handle and discard.
5. Place the removable bar code strip from the Chain of Custody form onto the device up one side, over the top and down the other side. This will "seal" the device and insure that its contents have not been tampered with.
6. Complete the Chain of Custody form in its entirety, sending only the top page or 'Laboratory Copy' to the lab. Keep the remaining copies for your records.
7. Package the sample and ship to the lab using the shipping material and label provided.
