Step By Step Instructions for Nail Sample Collection

1. Use a clean pair of nail clippers for cutting nails.

2. Rub the nail clippers with alcohol swabs to clean thoroughly prior to cutting for test collection.

3. Nails should be clean of polish, dirt and debris. Foreign materials such as nail polish, dirt, or anything else can make the test results invalid. The laboratory will still try to run nail samples with polish but presence of any foreign material in nail will make testing it harder.

4. Clip nails from all fingers and toes onto a clean paper.

5. Place all collected nail samples into a clean mailing envelope or a test collection kit. Please include shavings or finger nail fillings along with nail clippings for the maximum amount of detection time of 6 months.

6. Put the name of nail donor, nail sample collection date and the specimen ID number (on the outside of the envelope or kit).

7. Seal collection envelope and collector initial outside and place it along with the completed Chain of Custody form into an outside envelope and send to laboratory. If you choose to have the results stay anonymous and fully confidential, you can put "John" or "Joe Doe" on the forms. Please include a correct phone or email address if you want to be able to have lab contact you in case there is a problem with the sample received.

8. Make sure to identify all information requested on the chain of custody/requisition form.

Note: Drugs get deposited on the nails through the blood stream after they are inhaled or ingested. The drugs ingested will undergo metabolism and can generally be identified in the nail tissues 1-2 months after ingestion based on average growth rate.
